How does a QR code queue system work?
A QR code queue system turns a printed code into a link to a queue page. Customers scan it with their phone camera, join the queue and get a token. They follow their position live while staff call each token in turn, so nobody has to stand in line.
What the QR code actually does
A QR code is a printed web address. It does not hold the queue and it does not know who is waiting. When a customer scans it with their phone camera, the phone opens the queue page in its browser. That is why customers do not need an app: the page runs in the browser they already have.
The same code is shown to everyone. The queue itself lives on a server, so every customer and every staff screen sees the same line.
What the customer does
- Scan or click. They point the phone camera at the code at the door or counter, or click the queue link when it is shared online.
- Join. The queue page opens and they tap Join Queue.
- Get a token. The page shows their token number.
- Follow the queue. They see the token being served now, their position and how many people are ahead, updated live.
- Get called. When their token is called, they go to the counter. With Qrua, customers can opt in to a push notification on their phone.
What the business does
- Show the code. Print it or show it on a screen where customers arrive.
- Call the next token. Staff press a button on the staff screen. Every customer phone and the display update at once.
- Show the display. A TV or monitor can show the token being served and who is next, so people in the room can see the queue too.
An example: a clinic front desk
A patient walks in and scans the code on the door. Their phone shows token 14. The clinic is serving token 9, so five patients are ahead. The patient waits in the car and checks the phone from time to time. When reception calls token 13, the patient sees they are next and walks in. Reception did not write a name or hand over a paper slip.
What a QR queue does not do
A QR queue manages the waiting line. It does not take orders, take payments or book appointments. Those are separate jobs, and a business can do them the way it does today, then add the customer to the queue. A QR queue also needs the customer to have a phone that can scan, so businesses keep a way to add customers who do not.
