What is a virtual queue?

In short

A virtual queue is a line you join without standing in it. A system holds your place and calls you when it is your turn. The idea covers busy websites, call centres and in-person businesses. In person, customers join from their phone, see their position live and come back when they are called.

Three kinds of virtual queue

The term is used for three different things, which is why search results about it can look mixed.

KindWhat is waitingHow you are held
Website trafficVisitors trying to reach a busy site, such as a ticket saleA waiting page that lets people in one by one
Call centreCallers waiting for an agentA placeholder, and the system calls back when it is your turn
In personCustomers waiting at a counter, desk or shopA token on their phone, with a live position

This guide is mostly about the third kind, the one that replaces a physical line at a business.

How an in-person virtual queue works

The business shows a QR code where customers arrive. A customer scans it, joins the queue and gets a token. They follow their position on their phone, and staff call each token in turn. Because the customer holds a place on the phone instead of in the room, they can sit down, wait outside or run a short errand. For the full flow, see how a QR code queue system works.

An example: a service office

A busy service office has a hall full of people waiting for one counter. With a virtual queue, each visitor scans a code at the entrance and gets a token. The hall clears, people check their place from the phone, and staff call each token to the counter when it is time. Nobody lost their place by stepping outside.

When a virtual queue fits

  • Customers wait in person for a person or a counter, and turn up without a booking.
  • The waiting room or entrance gets crowded at busy times.
  • Customers would rather wait somewhere comfortable than stand in line.

It is not a replacement for appointments. If every customer has a booked time, a booking system is the better tool.

Where Qrua fits

Qrua is QR code queue management for businesses where customers wait their turn. Customers scan a QR code, get a token and follow their position live on their own phone, with no app to install. Owners run the queue from a simple staff screen and show it on a TV or monitor. You can create a queue in one click with no account and see the customer view straight away.

Questions about virtual queues

Is a virtual queue the same as a digital waitlist?
In everyday use, mostly yes. Both mean joining a list from your phone and being called when it is your turn. Some products use one term and some the other.
Is a virtual queue the same as booking an appointment?
No. An appointment fixes a time in advance. A virtual queue keeps your place in line, and you are called when the people ahead have been served. Qrua is a walk-in queue and does not handle appointments.
Do customers need an app for an in-person virtual queue?
Not with Qrua. Customers scan a QR code with their phone camera and everything happens in the browser.
Is a virtual queue free to use?
Some tools have free plans. Qrua's Free plan covers one queue with up to 10 tokens a day, with no credit card required.
